Microblading Patch Test & Consent: What Clients Should Know

Posted by Studio 17 Ltd on

We patch-test every new microblading client 48–72 hours before treatment and ask you to complete an informed consent form. It protects your skin, your health, and your results. 18+ only with photo ID.

Why we do patch test

A patch test checks for sensitivity to the pigments (and, if used, numbing products) before we work on your brows. It’s a small dot of pigment placed discreetly on the skin. Some UK councils make patch-testing for microblading a licensing condition, and insurers also expect it — so we treat it as non-negotiable for your safety. RedbridgeWest Suffolk Council

When it’s done

  • Timing: 48–72 hours before your appointment.

  • Who needs it:

    • All new clients.

    • Returning clients if it’s been 12+ months, your health/medication has changed (e.g., new allergies, started/stopped certain meds), or we’re changing pigment brand/shade.

  • If you’re travelling: Ask for a postal patch-test kit with instructions.

What happens during the patch test

  1. We cleanse the area (usually behind the ear or inner arm).

  2. We place a tiny pigment dot and, if applicable, a minute amount of topical anesthetic.

  3. Keep the area dry and observe for redness, itching, swelling, or heat. If you react, message us and do not scratch. We’ll advise next steps and alternative options.
(Note: Some councils explicitly require a recorded patch test for microblading/micropigmentation; we document it in your file.)

Informed consent: what you’ll sign

At your consultation you’ll complete a health questionnaire and sign an informed consent form that confirms you understand:

  • the procedure and typical risks (e.g., irritation, infection, colour changes),

  • aftercare and touch-up plan,

  • that services are 18+ only (bring photo ID),

  • optional photo/video consent for before/after images, and

  • how we handle your personal data (see Privacy Notice; you can withdraw marketing consent at any time).

A quick note on your data (UK GDPR)

Your health details are special category data. We need a lawful basis and a valid condition (often explicit consent) to process it. We store it securely and only use it for care, legal/insurance requirements, and any marketing you’ve clearly opted into.

Who cannot be treated (or may need GP clearance)

  • Under 18s. It’s illegal to tattoo anyone under 18 in Great Britain, and microblading is treated as a form of cosmetic tattooing.

  • Pregnant (and often breastfeeding) clients — reputable practitioners avoid PMU during pregnancy and many insurers exclude it. NCT (National Childbirth Trust)

  • On isotretinoin (Roaccutane) now or within the last 6 months (skin healing risks).

  • Uncontrolled health conditions affecting healing (e.g., certain bleeding disorders, poorly controlled diabetes) or active skin conditions in the brow area — we may ask for GP/dermatology clearance.

FAQs

Do I need another patch test for a colour change or new brand?
Yes — new pigment = new test. Also retest after long gaps or health changes.

Will a negative patch test guarantee zero reaction later?
No test is 100% predictive, but it significantly reduces risk.

Are you licensed/registered?
In England & Wales, microblading (semi-permanent skin colouring) requires local registration/licensing. We comply with our council’s requirements.

What to bring to your consultation

  • Photo ID (18+),

  • any medication list/allergy info,

  • previous brow treatment history,

  • and your questions — we love those.
